Pond Liner FAQ

Q1: How thick should a pond liner be?
A: For small decorative ponds, a 0.5 mm liner is usually enough. If you plan to keep fish, especially koi, go for at least 1.0 mm. For large koi ponds, professional aquascaping, or commercial projects, 1.2–2.0 mm is recommended for maximum durability.

Q2: Can I use a pond liner for koi or goldfish ponds?
A: Yes. Both EPDM and HDPE liners are fish-safe and non-toxic. A thickness of 1.0 mm or more is highly recommended for koi ponds, since koi tend to dig and can damage thinner liners.

Q3: How do I repair a damaged pond liner?
A: Small punctures or tears can be fixed with a liner repair patch kit or sealant designed for pond liners. For PVC and EPDM, patches are easy to apply. HDPE liners may require heat-welding or professional repair due to their rigidity.

Q4: Do I need to put anything under the pond liner?
A: Yes. It’s best to place a protective underlay (such as pond underlayment fabric, geotextile, or a layer of sand) under the liner. This helps prevent punctures from rocks, roots, or sharp objects in the soil.

Q5: How long does a pond liner last?
A: It depends on the material:

  • PVC: 5–10 years

  • EPDM: 20+ years

  • HDPE: 20+ years (especially in large-scale or industrial ponds)

Q6: Which is better—PVC, EPDM, or HDPE pond liners?
A:

  • PVC → Budget-friendly, good for small decorative ponds.

  • EPDM → Flexible, durable, fish-safe, best for koi ponds and backyard ponds.

  • HDPE → Strong, long-lasting, ideal for large-scale, agricultural, or industrial ponds.
